HISTORY

Humble beginnings

In 1985, in a small one-bedroom apartment in Hillbrow, Rita Valadas, working as a cocktail waitress at the Carlton Hotel, had a dream of starting a school. She borrowed a small plastic table and two chairs from a neighbour, put together some pamphlets and started a daycare with two children who were living in her apartment block.

It did not take long for the news to reach other parents in the neighbourhood, and Rita’s school grew rapidly. She soon had 15 children and it became necessary to acquire larger premises. She dutifully returned the borrowed table and chairs as she was now able to purchase her own for the children.

In 1986, Rita left South Africa with her husband and one-year-old son to Portugal. Her husband studied Theology, and after four years the Valadas family returned and moved into the buildings you see here today.

In 1993 Rita chose to revive her dream of opening a school, and so ABC Nursery School was born. She completed her BEd. Education degree simultaneously, majoring in Special Needs Education, Geography and Art.

ABC Nursery School continued to grow, and the demand from parents for more become pressing. A foundation phase from Grades 1 to 3 was introduced, and education was offered in English, Afrikaans, and Portuguese. Rita was the principal of ABC Primary School. The school has since grown even more. Each year an additional grade was incorporated and now ABC Primary School caters to children up to Grade 7.

This school is a gift from Rita Valadas, whose dream and perseverance gave children a safe and inspirational space to be loved and educated.

Very sadly, Rita passed away at the end of 2020. Her son, Jack Valadas, who also has his teaching degree and worked closely with his mother, will continue to run the school in her honour.

OUR VISION

To promote quality education for all so that all children could develop and participate as equal members of society.

To provide maps for the students through education to find their way in an overwhelming ever-changing world, that is based on the following four pillars of knowledge.

1. The pleasure to understand and to know

The pleasure to understand, and to know is to help children to understand their environment, to be able to communicate and to develop "surviving skills" translated as occupational skills, and to be able to integrate successfully into society and ultimately the world.

2. The know-how of education

Learning to do, is to teach children to put what they know into practice. It's the process of changing learning as simple transmission to required intellectual and mental skills.

3. Learning to be

Learning to be is to give children the freedom of thought, judgment, and imagination to develop their talents and enable them to develop independent, critical thinking and to form their own judgment.

4. Learning to live together

To teach a diversity of the human race and an awareness of the similarities between and the interdependence of all. Young people should be taught to adopt the point of view of other ethnic or religious groups so that the lack of understanding that leads to hatred and violence can be avoided.

Encountering others through dialogue and debate is one of the tools needed by twenty-first-century education.
